Citizens in 2016: Street Maintenance Highest Priority for City
Montrose, CO – The city takes citizen feedback seriously. In 2016, the city conducted its "Community Survey" asking residents where city services could be improved. The highest priority from those results was street maintenance. Residents can see this work in action this summer as the city is investing a record $5 million in street infrastructure improvements in 2018.
In 2016, 534 households returned or participated in the survey. Those aged 35-54 responded most to the survey, 30-percent, and those aged 55-74 were the second most at 28-percent. Based on gender, 52-percent responding was female versus 48-percent male.
From that survey, traffic congestion and condition of city streets were the two highest priorities identified from participants. Nearly 60-percent of respondents were dissatisfied with the condition of city streets and traffic flow.
Additionally, an overwhelming number of respondents said street maintenance was a city service that should receive "the most emphasis over the next two years."
In the 2016 survey, respondents pointed to Hillcrest Drive, Niagara Road, Main Street, Rio Grande, and Ogden Road as the highest priority areas for improvements within the next two years. Those roadways – identified from residents in the survey – are currently receiving major upgrades.
Another area of focus was parks and recreation infrastructure. Respondents said better quality restrooms were a priority for the city. As a result, the city is building a new restroom facility in Riverbottom Park which is projected to be completed by the end of this year.
