[ARCHIVED] Montrose To Host AJGA Junior Open Aug. 1-5, 2021

Montrose, CO — The city, in partnership with The Bridges Golf and Country Club, is pleased to announce that Montrose will host an American Junior Golf Association, AJGA, tournament at The Bridges golf course August 1-5, 2021.

The AJGA Junior Open at The Bridges will feature a field of 96 nationally touring junior golfers and their families. The field will also include a number of junior golfers from Montrose.

City staff welcomed the news following AJGA's addition of the Montrose event to the 2021 AJGA tournament schedule. The tournament is seen as a potential economic boon to the local economy during the community's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to bring this event to Montrose and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our community as well as the young golfers that will be participating in it," said City of Montrose Competitive Sports Program Coordinator Chris Iverson. "Those involved in the development of this tournament should be commended and those involved in the execution of the event will be working hard over the next few months to deliver something the community can be proud of."

The AJGA is a nationally known 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Proceeds from the August tournament will go to local charities.

In 2020 the AJGA held 101 tournaments across the United State. The organization currently has 7,300 members.

Montrose has earned statewide recognition following the success of the Montrose High School Indians golf team. In 2019 The Bridges hosted the Colorado High School Activities Association's 4A golf tournament where the MHS team clinched their third-straight state title. Local golfer Jordan Jennings is also the 2020 reigning Colorado 4A high school individual champion.

Notable AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Lexi Thompson, Phil Mickelson, and Paula Creamer.
