[ARCHIVED] Police Ask Residents For Help In Reducing Theft During Holiday Season

Montrose, CO — The Montrose Police Department is asking residents to be proactive in preventing thefts this holiday season by locking vehicles and homes and securing holiday package deliveries on doorsteps.

During the holiday season the number of theft reports typically rises as thieves look for easy opportunities to steal valuables from unlocked vehicles or holiday deliveries.

Montrose Police Chief Blaine Hall said the department has received new reports of packages being stolen from doorsteps, and the number of reported firearms stolen from vehicles is also raising concern.

At the Tuesday, November 20 City Council meeting, Hall told councilors that more firearms are being reported stolen from vehicles. A remedy Hall suggested was to simply not leave firearms in vehicles or, at least, make sure the vehicles are locked overnight.

Hall also said residents should ask friends and neighbors to help secure - with permission - packages left on doorsteps. Packages left on doorsteps for long periods of time can be alluring for thieves looking for easy targets. According to police officers, some of the thefts have been taking place during the daytime.

Hall also said officers will be out looking for intoxicated drivers this holiday season and asks anyone spotting an intoxicated driver to report them immediately.

For all non-emergency reports, call dispatch at 970-249-9110. In case of emergency, call 911.

CRIME STOPPERS: Please remember to call Crime Stoppers at 970-249-8500 or use mobile app P3 Tips, or website P3 Tips.com, if you are aware of a crime and would like to be rewarded for any information you have that leads to an arrest in that crime.
