Montrose, CO – The City of Montrose is partnering with the Montrose Botanical Society (MBS) to apply for a grant for $53,025 to help develop the Montrose Botanical Gardens Master Plan, and supporting construction plans for the remaining 2.3-acres of undeveloped space in the gardens.

The city must sponsor and submit the application for the Botanical Gardens to be eligible for the grant. The city will administer the grant funds if successful and will cover expenses for the project that will be reimbursed by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO).

The MBS has received estimates on the proposed project. An estimate of $25,000 for the master plan and an estimate of $45,700 for construction documents have been budgeted. Construction documents will focus on the future development of the gardens. The total project cost is $70,700.

There is a 25-percent match to the grant, which will be covered by the Montrose Botanical Society.

The Montrose Botanical Gardens is the only regional botanical garden in Southwestern Colorado. The gardens provide horticultural education and leadership for the residents of the Uncompahgre Valley.

“The Montrose Botanical Gardens is not only a community asset but a regional asset as well," said Kendall Cramer, the Grant Coordinator for the City of Montrose. "A successful grant award will serve as a catalyst to the completion of the Gardens which provide both educational and recreational opportunities.”

The master plan will include new demonstration and experimental gardens, a historical homestead interpretive center and agricultural irrigation farmstead, child and family-focused areas, and an environmental education building. The plan will be developed with community engagement.

The deadline to submit the application is November 2nd. The city expects to hear back on the possible award in March 2019.
