Montrose, CO – The City of Montrose is partnering with local and regional housing organizations to help residents with home improvement needs ahead of the winter months. A community meeting designed to connect local residents with these organizations has been scheduled for Sept. 13th.

Federal grant dollars and low-interest loans are some of the tools, which will be available for homeowners, landlords, and tenants who want to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes to reduce energy costs during the winter months.

The Tortilla Flats Affordable Home Repairs Meeting on Sept. 13th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at La Raza Park on the city's northwest side locally known as "Tortilla Flats,” will feature representatives from the City of Montrose, Housing Resources of Western Colorado, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Rural Development, Region 10 and the Delta Housing Authority.

Savannah Haney, the Housing and Citizen Engagement Assistant for the City of Montrose said the meeting is a chance to bring local residents and these organizations together in one place. Haney said the meeting is targeted for the Tortilla Flats neighborhood due to the amount of interest from residents there but is open to everyone in the community wanting to get more information on aid programs.

“It’s better to apply now, as it gets closer to winter, a lot of these agencies get overwhelmed with requests,” Haney said.

For example, a grant program for residents aged 62-and-older is available for those residents wanting to weatherize their homes. Other rehabilitation and self-help programs are available through aid packages designed for single-family home repair and rental property rehabilitation.

The emphasis of the meeting is that these programs are affordable through a combination of low-interest loans with low monthly payments and grant funds.

"It doesn't matter if you own or are renting if you're a landlord or a tenant, there are several organizations attending that are looking for ways to help,” Haney said.

Each organization will have booths in La Raza Park where residents can get information on how to apply for aid. Other information about affordable home repairs will be available at these booths. Spanish speaking translators will also be on hand to help.
